Operating in harmony with the Antarctic Ecosystem

Aker QRILL Company is committed to ensuring that our operations work in harmony with nature, supporting a thriving ecosystem while harvesting krill responsibly.

Whales and the Antarctic ecosystem

Whale and seal populations in Antarctica are recovering, indicating that krill remains an abundant source of food for them. To minimize disturbances, we use real-time monitoring and acoustic tracking to identify high whale activity areas and adjust fishing locations accordingly.

Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and fishing restrictions

We strictly adhere to MPA regulations set by CCAMLR, safeguarding biodiversity hotspots and critical feeding grounds for marine life. Seasonal and spatial fishing restrictions also ensure krill availability for predators while maintaining ecosystem balance.

Bycatch prevention and Eco-Harvesting technology

Our Eco-Harvesting™ system significantly reduces bycatch, allowing non-krill species to escape unharmed. The Antarctic krill fishery maintains one of the lowest bycatch rates globally at 0.1–0.3%, compared to 10–55% in other fisheries.
