United Nations report calls Antarctic fisheries sustainable managed

The report, produced with contributions from more than 650 experts across 200 institutions and over 90 countries – highlights the critical role of science-based management and international cooperation in achieving sustainable fisheries worldwide.

Sustainability has been at our core since day one. Before our first vessel entered the Southern Ocean, we built everything on transparency, science, and long-term care for the ecosystem” said Pål Skogrand, Chief Policy Officer at Aker QRILL Company.

FAO highlights that the krill fishery in the Antarctic operates under one of the world’s most precautionary management systems. Catch limits established by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) are set at a small fraction of the estimated biomass, ensuring that the ecosystem remains healthy and resilient.

Because we operate in Antarctica, the level of scrutiny is naturally higher. Often, perceptions—rather than facts or data—shape the conversation. But this independent third-party assessment helps level the playing field. It compares Antarctic fisheries with others worldwide and makes one thing clear:   If you are going to fish at all—which most would agree humanity will continue to do—there is no place better to do it than in the Antarctic krill fishery.  Nowhere else is the target biomass larger, the bycatch lower or the efficiency better”

Released earlier this year, the FAO’s findings take on new relevance as CCAMLR members meet in Hobart this month to discuss the establishment of new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Southern Ocean.

“The FAO report proves that conservation and sustainable use don’t have to be opposites,” said Skogrand. “As an engaged participant in CCAMLR’s work, we’re collaborating with stakeholders and member nations to move forward with ambitious, science-based marine protected areas — measures that safeguard Antarctica’s ecosystems while allowing responsible operators to continue supporting ocean health and global nutrition”

For Aker QRILL Company, the FAO’s conclusions reaffirm the importance of continued collaboration, transparency and science-based management. We operate in the Southern Ocean, and in close partnership with research institutions, NGOs and regulatory bodies, Aker QRILL Company continues to advance data-driven monitoring and adaptive management of the Antarctic ecosystem.
